UNESCO World Heritage Centre:Jaipur
Next level for you
India’s Pink City, Jaipur, has made it to the UNESCO World Heritage
sites list. One of the most prominent Rajasthan cities for travellers,
Jaipur has a lot for travellers and attracts a steady drove of tourists
from all over the world. It is also one of the most historically rich
cities in the state, and its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site will
further strengthen its position on the world map.
An announcement about Jaipur’s inclusion in the UNESCO list was made on July 6 after the 43rd meet of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee at Baku. The decision was hailed worldwide, and Indian PM Narendra Modi also took to Twitter to express his happiness, “Jaipur is a city associated with culture and valour. Elegant and energetic, Jaipur’s hospitality draws people from all over. Glad that this city has been inscribed as a World Heritage Site by @UNESCO”.

The decision was taken after the city was nominated for the tag, and was
inspected by ICOMOS (The International Council on Monuments and Sites)
last year. The historic city met the inspection standards and was thus
included in the final list as well.
Jaipur is also the capital and the largest city in the state of Rajasthan, and is also a part of the very popular Golden Triangle circuit in North India. Other cities that are a part of the circuit are Agra and Delhi. The city is also home to two prominent UNESCO World Heritage Sites in India - Amber Fort and Jantar Mantar. It was founded in 1727 by Jai Singh II, the King of Amer.
With its inclusion in the UNESCO listing, Jaipur is further expected to attract more tourists from around the world and the country. It should also be noted that all the sites in the listing are deemed important to the collective interests of humanity, and needs to be ‘an already classified landmark’ to make it to the UNESCO list.

Jaipur City, Rajasthan
The fortified city of Jaipur, in India’s northwestern state of
Rajasthan was founded in 1727 by Sawai Jai Singh II. Unlike other
cities in the region located in hilly terrain, Jaipur was established on
the plain and built according to a grid plan interpreted in the light
of Vedic architecture. The streets feature continuous colonnaded
businesses that intersect in the centre, creating large public squares
called chaupars. Markets, stalls, residences and temples built
along the main streets have uniform facades. The city's urban planning
shows an exchange of ideas from ancient Hindu and modern Mughal as well
as Western cultures. The grid plan is a model that prevails in the West,
while the organization of the different districts refers to traditional
Hindu concepts. Designed to be a commercial capital, the city has
maintained its local commercial, artisanal and cooperative traditions to
this day.

Jaipur, after Ahmedabad, became the latest city to be included in the
UNESCO World Heritage List. The decision to declare it as a heritage
city was taken at the 43rd session of the UNESCO World Heritage
Committee (WHC) in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 30th June to 10th July. This
is a proud moment for the residents of Jaipur and Rajasthan,
as well as the citizens of India. It is encouraging news for Rajasthan
Tourism too, since this declaration will bolster tourism in the state
and further enhance its prestige and popularity in the world.
